Food to Palette

Picture
From banana bread to sourdough starters, many of us have been getting reacquainted with our kitchens – and the messes to go along with it! But have you ever stopped to think about the way blueberries turn your fingers purple or how turmeric seems to stain your countertop yellow?

Join artist Kanika Gupta as she shows us how to make natural watercolour paints out of everyday grocery store items in this video series directed by cinematographer Amit Kehar. Each mini workshop will show how to extract colour from the produce, and include some watercolour painting tips for creating your own artwork.
This 5-part series is part of Ontario Culture Days’ Creative Residency program.

Episode 1: Yellow

Episode 1 kicks off the series with the primary colour yellow, made from turmeric.

Episode 2: Brown

Episode 2 shows us how to make the colour brown using coffee.

Episode 3: Grey

Episode 3 explores how to create a neutral grey using plums and baking soda.

Episode 4: Red and Orange

Episode 4 makes a bright primary red using beets.
Combine your primary red and yellow (from Episode 1) to make orange.

Episode 5: Purple and Green

In this final episode of the series, learn how to make purple in both an easy and more challenging way using either blueberries or red cabbage. See the magic unfold in front of your eyes by adding a bit of baking soda to make green!

This video ends with a montage of all the colours from all five episodes to make a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
